World Oceans Day, held every June 8th, is the United Nations-recognized day of ocean celebration and action. People all over our blue planet organize celebrations – which can be a huge event in your community, a special announcement, or anything in between – to support action to protect the ocean. This year, the theme is Healthy oceans, healthy planet, and we’re making a special effort to stop plastic pollution.

On April 8, 2015 First Coast chairman Paul Hayden presented an Ocean Friendly Garden slide show presentation to three of Sharon Silver’s science classes. The presentation demonstrated various ways the students and their parents could help protect the environment, our rivers and oceans while also saving resources and money through the use or the tenants of Surfriders Ocean Friendly Garden program (Conservation, Permeability and Retention).
Paul notes, “the students were very interested and involved in the discussion and asked good questions. It left me with the belief that they get the message and will be positive messengers of change if the future.”
